My Body Is My Country
(1991)

The title of this work is also the title of the introductory poem by the artist. On her work, Carvalho states, “Diary of Images: My Body is My Country is about the destruction of both nature and culture-the destruction of cultures by other cultures. My Body is My Country, a map of my survival strategies, begins the process of my personal decolonization.” This work was published for her exhibition at Real Art Ways and contains an essay by Lucy R. Lippard.

The book consists of a clear plastic box containing (back to front) a heavy piece of corrugated cardboard printed with a poem, fourteen loose pages of images and text, and a twelve-page staple-bound book.

Each of the loose pages is printed in a single color of ink: five images on opaque paper with the remainder on transparent vellum (allowing for layering and overlapping.) The book is monochromatic; mostly text with a few images, the first and last pages are transparet.
